Questions to Ask Any Summer Camp Before You Enroll

The questions every camp director expects to hear — and the ones that separate well-run programs from sketchy ones. Plus how to read the answers.

Good camp directors want you to ask hard questions. It's how they demonstrate the camp's strengths and how they qualify families who won't be a fit. The directors who deflect or get defensive are telling you something useful about how they handle the harder calls that come up during the season.

This is a working list. Pick the questions that matter to your family; don't deliver all 20 in one phone call. And listen carefully to how the camp answers, not just what they say.

1About safety and emergencies

"What's your staff-to-camper ratio, broken out by age group?" Better camps know this cold. Sloppy answers ("oh, we have plenty of staff!") are a flag.

"What's the protocol if a camper is seriously injured?" Listen for: on-site medical staff, hospital relationship, parent-notification timing (should be within 15-30 minutes), documented incident logging.

"Tell me about your last serious incident in the past 5 years and what you changed afterward." Every camp has had incidents. The ones that won't acknowledge any are either inexperienced or hiding something. The ones that say "here's what happened, here's what we changed" are operating well.

"What's the protocol for severe weather?" Especially for outdoor / adventure / waterfront programs. Look for: documented thresholds (e.g., lightning within X miles = evacuate water), staff training on the protocols, regular drills.

"How do you handle missing-camper situations?" A real procedure with a head-count cadence (every transition, every meal, every cabin check).

2About staff

"How are counselors screened?" Background check (county-level minimum; ideally national criminal database), reference checks, in-person interview. Anything less is a flag.

"What training do new counselors get before campers arrive?" ACA standard is a full week. Specifics to listen for: CPR/First Aid, behavior management, sexual abuse prevention training, and program-specific training (waterfront, climbing, etc.).

"What's your staff retention year-over-year?" Counselors-of-counselors language varies, but at sleepaway camps, ~50% returning staff is good; 70%+ is excellent. Very low retention (under 30%) suggests bad working conditions, which translates to lower-quality programs.

"Who's the youngest counselor working unsupervised with kids?" State laws vary; ACA standard says 18+ in solo-supervision roles. Camps that have 16-year-olds running cabin overnight are cutting corners.

"How do you train staff on signs of abuse — both peer and adult?" Reputable camps train on this explicitly. A camp that's never thought about it is dangerous.

3About the daily program

"Walk me through a typical Wednesday." Specific is good. Vague is bad. A director should be able to give you a 15-minute play-by-play without reaching for marketing materials.

"How are activities grouped — by age, by skill, by cabin?" Different camps do this differently. There's no one right answer; what matters is that the camp has thought about it.

"What happens when a kid doesn't want to do an activity?" Listen for: choice within structure, accommodation for kids who genuinely struggle, not "we make them do it" and not "we let them do whatever."

"Is there free time? How much, and what does it look like?" Modern sleepaway camps tend to be over-programmed. Some free time (an hour a day, structured "choose your activity" blocks) is healthier than back-to-back rotations.

"What's the rainy-day plan?" Real camps have a deep rainy-day playbook. "We just make it work" is a flag.

4About health and medical

"Is there a nurse on-site? When?" For day camp: at least during program hours. For overnight: 24/7 with on-call backup.

"How are medications stored and dispensed?" Locked, labeled, with documented dosing log. The camp should know this answer fast.

"What's the policy on lice / strep / pinkeye / norovirus?" The infectious-disease answer separates well-run camps from sketchy ones. Listen for: protocol, isolation procedure, parent notification, when they'd send a kid home.

"Tell me about your food program." Specifics: how do they handle food allergies, religious dietary needs, gluten-free, vegetarian / vegan? Most camps now accommodate these; the depth of the answer tells you how seriously.

"What's the policy on social media / phone use during camp?" For day camp: who can post photos of your kid, who consents. For overnight: phone policy specifics, photo policy, parent-portal access.

5About communication with parents

"How and when will I hear about my kid?" Sleepaway: most camps now use a daily-photo portal + weekly emails from a unit head. Day camp: typically a weekly email or app update.

"What's the protocol for me reaching out to my kid?" Sleepaway camps typically limit phone contact (for good reason — see the first-time sleepaway guide). The answer should be specific.

"How will you contact me if something happens?" First-line: text or call to the primary contact on file. Backup: secondary contact. Timing: within 30 minutes for medical issues, immediately for emergencies.

💡 The "what if my kid is homesick?" question. This is one of the best diagnostics. A good camp answers with specifics: "We let them ride it out for 48-72 hours with staff support, we call you on day three if it's not improving, we work together from there." A camp that says "we'd just call you right away" is going to send your kid home unnecessarily; a camp that says "they always get over it" isn't taking it seriously.

6About refunds, changes, and policy

"What's your refund / cancellation policy?" Get it in writing. Camps that fill quickly have stricter cancellation windows.

"If my kid leaves early because of homesickness / behavior / medical, what happens to the unused tuition?" Important to know in advance. Most camps don't refund for behavioral early departures; some prorate for medical.

"Can I see the parent / camper handbook before I enroll?" Reputable camps share this freely. Hidden handbooks are a flag.

"What happens if my kid violates a major rule (drugs, bullying, sneaking out)?" Tiered consequences with parent involvement is the standard. "We'd send them home immediately, no refund" is fine if they're upfront about it.

7About accreditation and oversight

"Are you ACA accredited? Can I see your most recent visit summary?" ACA-accredited camps voluntarily meet ~300 safety / staffing / program standards. ACA visits every 5 years. Camps proud of their accreditation share results freely.

"What state agency licenses you, and have there been any violations?" Most US states license overnight camps and / or day camps. State licensing records are public.

"Are there any pending or recent lawsuits I should know about?" Direct question. Honest camps tell you. Most camps haven't had any in recent memory.

8The questions kids should ask

If your kid is old enough (8+), let them ask their own questions during a tour or call:

  • "What do kids do in their free time?"
  • "What happens if I don't like the food?"
  • "What if I want to call my mom or dad?"
  • "Have other kids been homesick? What happened?"
  • "What if I miss home a lot?"

A camp that's good at communicating with parents but bad at communicating with kids isn't actually as good as it seems. Kids' questions also surface what your kid is actually worried about.

9How to read the answers

Three patterns to listen for:

Specifics > generalities. A director who reaches for marketing language ("our staff is amazing") is hiding behind it. A director who gives you specifics ("we hired 8 returning counselors this year and 12 new") is doing the work.

Acknowledgement > defensiveness. When you ask about past incidents or weak spots, a healthy camp acknowledges, contextualizes, and explains the response. An unhealthy one deflects or denies. The acknowledgement pattern matters more than the specifics — it tells you how they'll talk to you when something goes wrong during your kid's session.

Process > improvisation. Mature camps have documented procedures for the things you're asking about. New or smaller camps may not, and that's not necessarily disqualifying — but you should know which kind of camp you're sending your kid to and adjust your expectations.

⚠️ The biggest red flag of all. A camp that gets annoyed by the questions. You're not interrogating them; you're doing due diligence on a place you're paying $300-$3,000+ for a week. Any camp that treats parent questions as an inconvenience is a no.

A practical use of this list

Don't ask all 20 in one conversation. Pick:

  • 5-7 questions about the things that matter most to you, asked during the initial info call or tour
  • 3-4 follow-ups in email after, where you can request specifics the director couldn't supply on the spot
  • 2-3 questions for current families (if the camp connects you with a reference family — many will)

The goal is to make a decision, not to grade the camp. A camp that gets 4 of 5 questions right and is upfront about the fifth is often better than one that nails every answer perfectly — the latter is rehearsed, the former is real.
